The 18th edition Chevron Junior Tennis Championships came to a close on Sunday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan, with the youngsters of the 12 & 16 age groups showing glimpses of a potentially bright future.

In the Girls’ Under-16 category, Rebecca Ekpeyong capped off a memorable week with victory over Omolayo Bamidele in the final. Ekpeyong, who’s from the South-South was adjudged the most outstanding player of the tournament.
Elsewhere, 10-year-old sensation, Seun Ogunshakin, who shone at the U-12 AJC Finals qualifiers in Cotonou last month, won the Boys’ Under-12 category, defeating his teammate in Cotonou, Mohammed Idris in the final.
Similarly, Salamatu Haruna from the North-Central, who also represented Nigeria at the Cotonou event last month, emerged winner of the Girls’ Under-12 category, with victory over Nene Yakubu from the South-West.
The tournament, which is run by the International Tennis Academy, was a fitting climax to the Chevron Tennis Clinic—a development program for young players—which held in seven locations across five states in Nigeria.
