Players in the men’s and women’s fields kick-started their bids for main draw spots at the Vemp Open in Abuja on Saturday.
David Dawariye, who recently made the second round of the Rainoil Open in Lagos, claimed a 6-0, 5-3 (rtd) win over Lawal Paul to reach round two of the Vemp Open qualifiers. Dawariye will next take on Ambrose Michael, who beat David Igoche 7-5, 6-1.
Michael Osewa, who also reached the second round of the Rainoil Open, began his qualifying campaign on Saturday in Abuja on fine note, beating Saminu Abubakar 6-1, 7-5. Osewa will next play Abraham Olatunji, who crushed Caleb Friday 6-0, 6-0.

Elsewhere, Emmanuel Ikakah rallied from a set down to beat Aliyu Umar 2-6, 6-2, 10-6, while youngster, Ibrahim Suleiman came through a tight super tiebreaker to claim a 6-4, 5-7, 13-11 victory over Samson Adewale.
In the women’s field, Toyin Asogba began her quest for a main draw place with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-7 victory over Esther Olamide. The youngster, who reached the second round in the women’s singles event at the Rainoil Open, will next play Ngozi Dirisu who got a bye in the first round.
Mariam Salami took out Abies Amadasun 6-3, 6-3 and will next face Ramota Odeyemi, who claimed an easy 6-0, 6-2 win over Naomi Sunday.
