Vemp Open: Quadre beats Bamidele to set up semifinal date with defending champion, Samuel

Oyinlomo Quadre remained on course for a clean sweep of all national titles this year, following a 6-2, 6-3 victory over her doubles partner, Omolayo Bamidele at the Vemp Open in Abuja today.

Quadre’s victory sees her set up a semifinal meeting with defending champion, Blessing Samuel, who made light work of Stella Udokwelu, winning 6-3, 6-2.

The semi-final encounter between the two will be a repeat of their semifinal contest at the Rainoil Open last week, which Quadre easily won.

Elsewhere, Christie Agugbom matched her semifinal run last year, with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Bukola Olowu. Agugbom, who reached the Rainoil Open final last week, will play for another final place in this week’s event, when she takes on Ibironke Oladipo on Friday.

Oladipo had returned to court against last year’s runner-up, Loveth Donatus today, having held a 3-1 final set lead on Wednesday, to wrap up a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 quarter-final victory. She took on Aanu Aiyegbusi in the semifinals and had no much troubles securing a 6-2, 6-3 win over the No. 2 player.

However, Aiyegbusi performed better in doubles duties with her partner, Osariemen Airhunwhunde – the duo beating Bunmi Are and Khadijat Salami 6-1, 6-2 to reach the semifinals.

Loveth Donatus and Oluchi Ozurumba also advanced to the doubles semis, following a comprehensive 6-1, 6-1 win over Toyin Asogba and Mariam Salami.

In the semis, which held same day, Donatus and Ozurumba fell short to defending champions, Christie Agugbom and Blessing Samuel. Agugbom and Samuel, after dropping the second set, proved too good in the super tiebreaker to claim a 6-2, 4-6, 10-6 win and advance to the final.

The pair will take on the young duo of Omolayo Bamidele and Oyinlomo Quadre, who claimed a 6-3 rtd win over Aanu Aiyegbusi and Osariemen Airhunwhunde.

The women’s doubles final will be a repeat of the Rainoil Open women’s doubles final, which Bamidele and Quadre won in straight sets.
