Defending champion, Emmanuel moved into the Vemp Open final after a 6-2, 2-1 (rtd) win over Nonso Madueke in Abuja today.
Emmnauel, who’s claimed the CBN Open and Rainoil Open titles this year, broke twice in the first set – the second for a 4-1 lead to take complete control of proceedings. He would close out the set and then, carve out an early break in the third game of the second set for a 2-1 lead before Madueke retired due to injury.
The 21-year-old, ranked No. 1 in the country, will take on Joseph Imeh in the title match on Saturday – a repeat of last year’s final encounter.
Imeh, ranked second, dropped just a game in a one-sided 6-0, 6-1 victory over Emmanuel Idoko in the other semis.
Idoko avoided the ignominy of a double bagel by getting on board in the sixth game of the second set, when he broke for 5-1. Imeh would break back to seal victory.
Saturday’s championship match will be the third final encounter between both men this year after their meetings at the Dala Championship in Kano last month, which Imeh won, and last week’s Rainoil Open in Lagos, where Emmanuel prevailed.
In the men’s doubles final, Nonso Madueke and Lawal Shehu defeated Joseph Imeh and Christian Paul in a second set tiebreaker for a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory.
Imeh and Paul have now contested two straight finals as a pair but haven’t been able to get over the line in both.
