Defending champion, Blessing Samuel claimed her second win in as many weeks over Osariemen Airhunwhunde, following a comfortable 6-1, 6-2 victory at the Vemp Open in Abuja on Wednesday.

Samuel, who had beaten Airhunwhunde in the first round of the Rainoil Open in Lagos last week, scored another win to move into the quarter-finals, where she will take on Stella Udokwelu, who defeated Mary Udoffa 6-1, 6-3.

Nigeria’s top player, Oyinlomo Quadre didn’t break a sweat in a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Toyin Asogba. The 16-year-old, aiming for a 4th consecutive national title this week, takes on her doubles partner, Omolayo Bamidele next. Bamidele had secured a 6-3, 4-1 rtd win over Omolade Aderemi.

Elsewhere, Aanu Aiyegbusi, who’s ranked No. 2 in the country, took out Bunmi Are 6-1, 6-1, while Christie Agugbom dismissed Oluchi Ozurumba 6-2, 6-0.

In the women’s doubles, the duo of Omolayo Bamidele and Oyinlomo Quadre advanced to the semifinals, following a 6-3, 4-1 rtd win over the pair of Rose Abu and Bukola Olowu.

In the top half of the women’s doubles draw, Christie Agugbom and Blessing Samuel powered past Christie Nwankwo and Omotayo Osewa 6-3, 6-2 to also make the semis.
