Men’s Singles Draw

The CBN Senior Open Tennis Championship is a national tournament open to only Nigerian players that runs between the month of May and June every year. The tournament used to be staged at the the National Stadium in Lagos, but has been held at the National Tennis Centre of the Abuja National Stadium in the last two seasons.

The tournament, which currently attracts over 200 Tennis players nationwide has been played in Lagos every year since its inception in 1978, but in 2018 it was moved to Abuja Temporarily to Commemorate the 40 years anniversary of the competition. It is the oldest National Tournament in Nigeria and It is being sponsored by the Central Bank Of Nigeria(CBN).

It is a week long tournament with competition available in different categories such as the Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, Men’s Doubles and the Women’s Doubles, Wheel Chair Men’s singles and Wheel Chair Women’s singles.

The Championship has in fact become a selection ground for the country in preparation for major competitions such as Davis Cup, All Africa Games, etc.

The CBN Open has helped, over the years, in the discovery of tennis stars like David Imonite, Sadiq Abdullahi, Remi Osho, Sunday Maku, Veronica Oyibokia, Rolake Olagbegi, Clara Udofa, Margaret Oladunjoye, and more recently the likes of Shehu Lawal, Sunday Maku, Abdulmumuni Babalola, Sunday Emmanuel, Fatima Abinu, Destiny Da Silva, Taiwo Owolabi, Christy Agugbom, Sylvester Emmanuel, Blessing Samuel, Sarah Adegoke and a host of others.

The Bank in 2007, introduced the CBN Junior Tennis Championship to ensure that new stars are discovered and developed early enough. The championship which serves as a feeder to the senior category is open to boys and girls of 10, 12, 14 and 16 years of age.

The CBN Senior Open Tennis Championship is played on hard courts and The Prize Money for the Men’s Singles Champion and the Women’s Singles Champion is equal at N700,000 for the winners.
