Day 2 of action at the 14th edition of the CBN Junior Championship going on at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club produced some eye-catching results.

Starting with the boys Under-12 from Group A, top seed, Yohanna Yakubu followed up his first-round victory with another impressive 9-4 win over Isreal Adewusi. It was Adewusi’s first loss of the tournament. For Arwal Jaji, who lost his first match to Yakubu, he redeemed himself in the 9-7 defeat of David Edward.

Nene

Nene Yakubu made it two wins on Thursday.

From Group B, 2nd seed Seyi Ogunsakin didn’t have a comfortable time in his 9-7 victory over stubborn Victor Hemba. Hemba had also lost in the same fashion to Mohammed Jubril in the first round. Jubril however made it his second win of the group stage with a near-perfect 9-1 show over Hussein Ayoola.

The boys Under-16 Group B produced perhaps the match of the day as John Nubari had to rely on a game-breaker to overcome Precious Ikeuba 9-8 (10-7). It was Ikeuba’s first defeat in the group and he next faces high flying Mohammed Idris who dispatched Henry Aina 9-0 in the other group game.

Elsewhere, from Group A, top seed and 2019 Under-12 champion, Seun Ogunsakin beat Praise Ikeuba 9-4 while Lucky Danjuma recorded his second win of the tournament conquering Onyekachi Ogunjiofor 9-2.

The top-seeded player in the girls Under-14, Nene Yakubu continued her dominant display against Priscilla Terfa on Thursday winning 9-1 in Group A. It was not the same story in Group B as Favour Ameachi seeded 2nd was dispatched by Khadijat Mohammed 9-3. Also from group B, Fego Ayetuoma lost her second game of the tournament to high flying Amarachi Ezeh 9-1.

The other winner from the age category was Mary Azi that defeated Ndidi Osaji 9-2.

Meanwhile, there was more drama in the boys Under-16 Group A as number 1 seed Gabriel Inyang surprisingly lost to Moses Olamilekan 9-2. Olamilekan came into the match against Inyang the underdog but quickly made his first match loss to Ganiyu Mubarak a fluke.

However, 2nd seed, Joshua Maxwell was in his commanding best beating Filipo Trombi 9-2 in Group B.  Trombi had earlier in the first match lost to David Ekpeyong who dispatched Silas Issac 9-1.

Elsewhere, in the girls Under-16 from Group A, top seed, Oiza Yakubu continued her fine start to the tournament winning 9-4 against Chidinma Ezeh while Salamtu Haruna produced a flawless display in a 9-0 victory over Toyin Adeniran to record her second win in the group.

For 2nd seed Mary Udoffa, she bounced back from her first-round loss beating Serena Teluwo 9-5. The match was the first of two matches Teluwo played on Thursday. She would later defeat Blessing Otu 9-5, who had earlier dispatched Destiny Okhinaye with the same scoreline.
