Christie Agugbom, 37, defeated 2nd seed Aanu Aiyegbusi in straight sets to reach the womens singles final of the Rainoil Open in Lagos today.
Agugbom, who’s seeded 4th, registered a 6-3, 6-4 win to make her second straight final here. Aiyegbusi started well, though, breaking in the 3rd game for 2-1 and consolidating with a hold to go 3-1 up. But Agugbom stung into action, winning the next 5 games to take the set.
Aiyegbusi again took the lead in the second set, as she broke for the second time in the set for a 4-2 lead, but Agugbom would fight back to restore parity at 4-4 before eventually securing the win.
Agugbom will now come up against Oyinlomo Quadre in Sunday’s final. Quadre again proved too strong for Blessing Samuel, as she defeated the defending champion 6-1, 6-1 to stretch her head-to-head lead over her in 2019 to 2-0.
Samuel got onboard in the 6th game of the opening set to avoid a bagel, and again in the 3rd game of the second set for 1-2. She was however unable to alter the course of the match, with Quadre simply too good.
In the doubles, Omolayo Bamidele and Oyinlomo Quadre capped off a fine week of partnership with the women’s title, following a solid win over last year’s winners, Christie Agugbom and Blessing Samuel.
The teenage duo registered a 6-3, 6-4 victory to emerge champions.
