The first day of the 2019 BNP Paribas World Team Cup African Qualification in Nairobi saw Nigeria’s men whitewash their Rwandan opponents 3-0 in their first round-robin pool tie of the week.
Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Paralympian Wasiu Yusuf and his compatriot Alex Adewale, who also played at London 2012, brought their experience to the fore in Nigeria’s Pool 1 victory over the East Africans.
Yusuf defeated Ernest Ndayishimiye 6-1, 6-2 to put Nigeria in front before Adewale put the tie beyond any doubt after he handed Viator Dusabimana a double bagel. The Nigeria duo would complete the 3-0 win after dropping just one game in the doubles rubber.
Rwanda will seek to make up for their loss when they take on South Africa in Friday’s pool 2 contest.
Similarly, host nation, Kenya secured 3-0 wins over Ghana’s and Tanzania’s men’s and women’s teams, respectively.
Collis Omondi and Peter Munuve earned the host nation an unassailable 2-0 lead in the first men’s Pool 2 tie between Kenya and Ghana after both players earned 6-0, 6-1 singles wins against Abdullai Samadu and Abdul Razak Nuhu, respectively. Munuve and Rajab Athman then teamed up to win the doubles rubber 6-2, 6-0.
Ghana will now play Tanzania in Friday’s Pool 2 contest.
