National Youth Games: Ibrahim, Ogunsakin, Udoffa ease into quarter-finals in Ilorin

Following the suspension of matches at the National Youth Games in Ilorin on Wednesday due to rain, main draw action finally got underway on Thursday, with a host of youngsters knee deep in first, second and third round action at the tennis courts of the University of Ilorin.

Top seed, Suleiman Ibrahim of FCT, who received a bye in the first round, made it through to the quarter-finals of the boys’ singles, following a 4-0, 4-2 victory over Paul Okonkwo of Delta in the second round and another quick 4-2, 4-0 win over Imo’s Chijioke Uche in the third round. Ibrahim was joined by 3rd seed, Ganiyu Mubarak of Oyo, who steamrolled Nuhu Ndwakan of Adamawa for a 4-0, 4-0 victory to reach the third round, where he defeated Sodiq Kushimo of Ogun 4-2, 5-3.

Seun Ogunshakin of Ekiti was also in imperious form on the day, with the youngster dismissing Hilton Omah of Adamawa 4-0, 4-0 in the second round, before going on to thrash Clement Dickson of Kaduna 4-1, 4-1 to join the quarterfinal train.

Akwa Ibom’s David Ekpeyong didn’t break a sweat in his 4-0, 4-2 second round drubbing of Michael Nekekpemi of Bayelsa and his perfect 4-0, 4-0 third round victory over Bello Yahuza of Niger.

The Games’ second seed in the boys’ field, Daniel Adeleye of Ekiti beat Ezekiel Azi of FCT 5-3, 4-1 in the second round and will take on Ikenna Okonkwo of Delta in the third round on Friday.

Elsewhere in the girls’ field, top seed, Esther Azi of FCT had soundly defeated Emmanuella Kwange of Niger 4-0, 4-0 in the second round, but failed to contain Mary Udoffa of Akwa Ibom in the third round, as she was beaten 4-2, 4-0. Imole Afolabi of Oyo and Faith Adeusi of Ekiti got walkovers into quarter-finals after their respective opponents failed to show up on court.

Third round singles action will continue on Friday. The boys and girls doubles as well as the mixed doubles will serve off on Friday, too.
