Tennis prodigy, Marylove Edwards cruised into the quarter-finals of the GTFLifetime Athletic Open in Accra, Ghana, following a straightforward 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tatiana Loglo of USA.
Edwards, who received a first round bye, began her quest for a first ITF Junior title this year against the American and had no problems dismissing her.
The 14-year-old Nigerian will next take on either Amany Kouame of Ivory Coast or France’s Lea Bathellier for a place in the semifinals.
Elsewhere, Oiza Yakubu also booked her place in the quarter-finals with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over Carmen Kpadonou of Benin Republic.
In the men’s singles, Abayomi Philips was rock-solid against Bright Nortey, winning 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals, where he will face top seed, Ouattara Nafiralo.
Joshua Aji, meanwhile, couldn’t make it through, as he was beaten 6-1, 6-1 by No.2 seed, Paul Ngouadjio. Aji, however, advanced to the doubles quarter-finals, partnering with Augustus Tetteh of Ghana. Both men doing well to beat Eric Amarh and Joseph Hammond 6-3, 6-4. Aji and Tetteh will next take on the Beninese-Cameroonian duo of Vence N’tcha and Paul Ngouadjio, who are both top seeds.
Abayomi Phillips and Vishesh Patel were beaten 2-6, 6-2, 10-5 by Richmond Armaah and Emmanuel Wettey.
In the women’s doubles, Serena Teluwo and Oiza Yakubu were beaten 6-4, 7-5 by Tatiana Loglo and Valentine Talaki.
