Marylove Edwards was beaten in straight sets by Russia’s Sofiya Lebedeva in the quarter-finals of the Kigali Junior International Open 2 – a Grade 5 clay-court event in Rwanda on Thursday.

The 14-year-old Nigerian wunderkind had advanced to the quarterfinals after an impressive come-from-behind 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory over India’s Himadri Kashyap on Wednesday. In the quarter-finals, however, Lebedeva proved to be the player with the greater intensity, as she secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Edwards.

Edwards will now turn her attention to the Rwanda International Junior Open, another Grade 5 clay-court tournament, which begins on Monday, 24 June at the Cercle Sportiff de Kigali in Kigali, Rwanda.
