Qualifying action for the second week of the Lagos Open got underway on Monday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club in Onikan, with Nigerians seeking to make the main draw.

Sylvester Emmanuel, Sarah Adegoke were among the home players who made it through to the final round of qualifying.

In the men’s field, Sylvester Emmanuel defeated Augustine Stephen 6-2, 6-4 to set up a final round meeting with his countryman, Gabriel Friday, who defeated Emmanuel Oche 6-2, 6-2.

Wilson Igbinovia dismantled Agassi Tomegah of Ghana 6-0, 6-1 and will next face Arnaud Sewanou of Benin for a place in the main draw. Paul Emmanuel, who defeated Omotayo Omodara 6-2, 6-2 will play his compatriot Tochukwu Ezeh, who defeated Matthew Abamu 7-6(2), 6-1.

In the women’s field, Sarah Adegoke advanced to the final round, following an easy 6-0, 6-3 victory over Abiodun Oyegoke. Adegoke will next face South Africa’s Isabella Kruger for a place in the women’s draw.

On Court 6, Aanu Aiyegbusi came back from a set down to beat Blessing Anuna 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 and set up a final round encounter with Sathwika Sama of India. Omolade Aderemi handed her countrywoman, Peace Udoh a double bagel and will face Carla Touly of France next.

Elsewhere, Patience Onebamhoin toughed out a tight 1-6, 7-6(3), 10-7 victory over Osariemen Airhunwhunde and will play Sweden’s Anette Munozova next, while Oiza Yakubu, who beat Amara Odoh 6-2, 6-2, faces Ronke Akingbade.

Qualifying action continues Tuesday from 9:30am at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan.
