Kaduna Clay Court National Junior Tennis Championship action continued in Kaduna on Wednesday, as players from all parts of the country battle it out in various categories.

In the Boys 14 and Under, third round action went underway and in an interesting turn of events, FCT’s Yahaya Sani roared back from a set down, saving a match point in the process, to defeat top seed, Mubarak Ganiyu 1-4, 4-2, 6-4.

Kaduna Clay Court: FCT players dominate Day 2 as tournament enters Quarterfinal stage

Against all odds, Yahaya Sani is into the Quarterfinal.

Meanwhile, second seed, Seun Ogunsakin didn’t have any trouble heading into the Quarter-finals after defeating Rahman Zayan in an easy 4-2, 4-0. Ekiti’s Ogunsakin, popularly called ‘Nadal’ by his admirers, will next face a familar foe in Lucky Danjuma for a place in the semifinals. Danjuma needed a match tie-break to defeat Emeka Ogunjiofor 4-2, 2-4, 7-5.

Also, three other players from FCT defeated their opponents to join Yahaya Sani and Lucky Danjuma in the Quarter-finals. With two FCT players facing themselves in the next round, one player from the state is guaranteed to play in the Boys 14 and Under semifinals.

In the Girls 14 and Under category, the top four seeds all put in impressive performances to secure a spot in the Quarter-finals.

Top seed, Imole Afolabi from Oyo, had a bit of trouble against Nenrotmun Polycap, but still managed to clinch a 4-1, 2-4, 7-5 win, While fourth seed Khadijat Mohammed survived a tough first set before defeating Eunice Iorlumun 5-4(5), 4-2.

Meanwhile second and third seed, Faith Adeusi and Salamatu Haruna both dismissed Alice Paul and Benita Beunyen respectively, with the same scoreline, 4-0, 4-0.

In the Boys 16 and Under, seeded one, Canice Abua eased past Unity Augustine in a one-sided 4-0, 4-0 win. Abua, who is from FCT, won the ITF Juniors(1st week) and National Youth Games Gold last year.

Second seed, Suleiman Ibrahim claimed an easy 4-0, 4-1 win over Oyo player, Atanda Qayum. Both Abua and Ibrahim participated in this year’s CBN Senior Open, where they made it to the second round.

In the 2nd round of the Boys 16 and Under, Canice Abua continued his fine form as he defeated Kaduna’s Adamu Jibril 5-3, 5-3, before Suleiman Ibrahim, representing Kaduna, clinched his quarterfinal spot with a 4-1, 5-3 win over Meni Irimiya.

In other Boys 16 matches, third and fourth seeds also defeated their opponents to advance into the next round. Third seed, Michael Akpan from FCT eased past Ojente Friday, who is also from FCT in a 4-1, 4-2 win. While, Oyo State’s Michael Akinmusire(fourth seed) thrashed Taraba player, Martin Michael 4-1, 4-1.
