Great Britain’s Darryl Hale turned 28 on Wednesday and was celebrated at the National Tennis Centre in Abuja.

The Brit had entered to compete at the Tombim Abuja Open this week, but couldn’t get through the qualifying rounds. He has, however, turned his attention to the Dayak Tennis Championships- the second ITF World Tour event- which will kick-off next week.

But away from the hostilities of the competition, the sponsors and organizers had a birthday celebration for Hale, and the Brit was grateful for the gesture.

“I really appreciate it,” said Hale, who’s in Abuja to compete for the third straight year. “It was very special because going from year to year, different people coming in and out. I’ve been here several times and it’s very special for them to remember, especially with the cake, it was really cool.”

Since the yearly ITF World Tour event in Abuja usually coincides with the period of his birth, Hale says it will be nice to celebrate another birthday in the capital city.

“Yes it’s nice, it’s great,” the 28-year-old said, when asked if he wants to be in Nigeria for subsequent birthdays. “Last year, I actually was flying on my birthday and this year again I get to spend it again with my buddies.”
