Christie Agugbom at 37 is still hitting with devastating efficiency. The 2-time champion defeated Aanu Aiyegbusi 7-5, 6-1 to advance to her second consecutive CBN Open final in Abuja on Friday.
Agugbom had fallen behind early in the first set, when Aiyegbusi broke for a 1-0 lead. However, she produced some spirited effort to carve out a decisive break in the 10th game to stop Aiyegbusi from serving out the set. She then consolidated with a hold and broke in the 12th game to close out the set.
The second set was smooth sailing for the 37-year-old, as she broke twice to power to victory.
Agugbom will now take on 16-year-old Oyinlomo Quadre in a ‘Clash of Generation’ final match on Saturday.
Quadre kept up her utterly sensational form to hammer Blessing Anuna 6-0, 6-0. It is the second time in this tournament the youngster would register a double bagel victory, after having defeated Osariemen Airhunwhunde by that scoreline in the second round.
It has been a terrific tournament for both players and they will certainly be looking to cap off a memorable week by clinching the title on Saturday.
Quadre continued her brilliance in the doubles final, as she partnered with Mary Tenu-Michael to beat the duo of Blessing Samuel and Christie Agugbom in 6-2, 6-3 and claim the doubles title.
The winning pair had clinched Gold in the doubles event at the National Sports Festival in Abuja last year, and have powered to victory yet again to end their doubles campaign this week on a high.
