Qualifiers for the main draw of the 2020 CBN Senior Open continued on Saturday at the National Tennis Centre in Abuja, with a host of players competing for the 16 spots in the main draw of the tournament.

In the men’s singles, 30 players who didn’t get to play on Friday, met each other in matches that decides who gets to the second round of the qualifiers and who exits the tournament.

Saturday saw David Dawariye thrashing opponent, Ephraim Ogbonna, in a rather easy 4-1, 4-1 win to advance into the next stage of the qualifiers. Dawariye was part of the Under-16 team that finished third at the African Junior Championships in Lome, earlier this year.

Elsewhere, Christopher Itodo turned a rather tight first set around to defeat Chibuzor Onyekwelu 5-3, 4-1. While Saminu Abubakar also won a hard-fought match against Fortune Emmanuel. The match which resulted in a match tie-break ended 4-2, 0-4, 10-7, in favor of Abubakar.

In the 1st round of qualifying for the women’s singles, some players got a bye and advanced into the 2nd round, while others battled each other for a spot in the next round.

Sunmisola Kajare eased past Stella Onwukwe, in a seemingly uncontested match that ended in a 4-0, 4-0, just as Khadijat Salami sent Juliet Enyi packing after a 4-0, 4-1 victory.

The 2nd round of the qualifiers also went underway at the National Tennis Centre, soon after the 1st rounds were completed, on Saturday. With 64 male players and 32 female players aiming to make it to the final round of qualifying.

Suleiman Ibrahim jostled past Aliyu Abubakar in a 4-2, 4-2 win, securing himself a spot in the final qualifying actions to come after. The youngster was awarded the Most Outstanding Player of Under-16 boys at the CBN Junior Championship, last year.

Joshua Daniel, in a rather interesting turnout of events, had to fight for his chance when his opponent Olaniyi Ibiwoye upped his game in the second set, after losing the first. In the end, Daniel had a 4-1, 5-4(3) victory.

Meanwhile, in the second round of the women’s singles qualifiers, Khadijat Salami didn’t find it as easy as she did in her previous round. She defeated Esther Oni in a slim 5-4(5), 1-4, 5-4(5) match.

Jesutoyosi Adeusi handed Sunmisola Kajare a defeat, advancing into the final qualifying round, after a 4-2, 4-0 win. While Esther Azi placed herself in the next round by defeating Mariam Salami in a 4-0, 5-3 match.
