Teen sensation, Oyinlomo Quadre produced a statement performance to beat 8th seed, Osariemen Airhunwhunde and advance to the quarterfinals of the CBN Open in Abuja on Wednesday.
The 16-year-old was flawless in a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Airhunwhunde and will now take on top seed Blessing Samuel in a blockbuster quarter-final showdown on Thursday.
Samuel, who’s chasing a fourth consecutive national title, defeated former Nigeria’s No. 1, Omotayo Osewa 6-0, 6-4 to stay on track for a maiden CBN Open crown.
Elsewhere, Jumai Mohammed proved too powerful for Bunmi Aare, as the youngster surrendered only two games in a 6-0, 6-2 win to progress to the quarterfinals, where she squares off against Aanu Aiyegbusi, who was also impressive in a 6-0, 6-2 win over Mary Tenu-Michael.
Last year’s finalist, Christie Agugbom eased past wildcard, Favour Moses 6-1, 6-2 to set up a quarterfinal clash with yet another youngster, Omolayo Bamidele. Bamidele edged Ronke Akingbade 7-5 3-6, 7-6(5) in almost 3 hours and 30 minutes of relentless hitting.
Also, Blessing Anuna claimed a hard-fought 7-5, 7-5 victory over Rose Abu to book her quarterfinal spot. Anuna will next take on Bukola Olowu, who beat Patience Onebamhoin in straight sets. Olowu recorded a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Onebamhoin, who got undone by her numerous unforced errors.
