Qualifying action at the CBN Open is under way at the National Tennis Centre in Abuja, with a host of players looking to book a spot in the main draw of the event.
This year’s event, which is the 41st edition, has seen an expansion in the draw size of both the men’s and women’s singles qualifiers. Unlike past years, the men’s qualifying draw this year has a draw size of 128, with 3 qualifying rounds which will see 16 players qualify for the main draw. First off though, a pre-preliminary round, which held on Friday, whittled down 32 players to 4, all of whom will now join in on the qualifying action.
Meanwhile, the women’s qualifying draw has a draw size of 64, with 3 rounds from which 8 players will qualify for the main draw. Action already began on Friday, with all players, with the exception of those who received first-round bye, slugging it out in round one. Action continues on Saturday.
The men’s qualifying draw action begins on Saturday, 22 June.
The men’s field will have a main draw size of 64, which comprise 44 direct acceptances, 4 wildcards and the 16 which will come from the qualifying rounds. For the women’s category, it will be a main draw size of 32, consisting of 20 direct acceptances, 4 wildcards, and 8 qualifiers.
