Oiza Yakubu, who turned 14 this week, did well to secure bronze in the girls’ category of the African Junior Circuit Under-14 tournament in Lome, Togo, on Thursday. Meanwhile, Suleiman Ibrahim and Iye Onoja, both settled for a 4th-place finish.
Yakubu came up short in her semifinal match against Lili-Bell Minet of Ivory Coast, as she was beaten 6-1, 6-0. The defeat saw her take on her compatriot, Iye Onoja, who also lost her semifinal match 3-6, 4-6 to Gloriana Nahum.
In the third place match between the Nigerian girls, it was Oiza Yakubu, who put up the better performance to come away with a 4-2, 4-2 win and claim bronze.
In the boys’ field, Suleiman Ibrahim couldn’t secure a final ticket, as he was edged 6-2, 7-5 by Togo’s Isaac Padio. The result saw him settle for a third-place match against Finoana Rakotomala of Madagascar. Rakotomala would come out on top in the encounter to finish 3rd, leaving Ibrahim in 4th place.
