The individual event at the ITF/CAT African Junior Championship qualifiers in Togo concluded on Thursday, with Nigerians in the Under 16 category claiming doubles titles.

In the Boys U16s doubles final, Canice Abua and David Dawariye produced a solid display to beat the Ivorian duo of Kouadio Patel and Francky Hoimian 6-2, 7-6(5) to clinch the title.

Abua and Dawariye had eased through the first set before toughing out a tight second set win in a tiebreaker to emerge victorious.

In the Girls U16s, Nigeria’s Marylove Edwards and Blanche Minet of Ivory Coast edged the duo of Rebecca Ekpeyong and Oiza Yakubu in straight sets to secure the title.

Edwards and Minet, who were doubles champions at the NTF International Junior Championships in Abuja two months ago, registered a 6-3, 6-3 win in Lome today to cap off a week of fine partnership.

Marylove Edwards was also on singles duties on Thursday, as she took on her compatriot Oiza Yakubu in the Girls U16 third-place match. Edwards, 14, wasn’t troubled as she went on to hand Yakubu a double bagel.

Elsewhere in a third-place singles match in the Boys U14 category, Mubarak Ganiyu defeated Mohammed Idris 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to finish third in the category.

The team event at the Championship gets underway on Friday, 10 – Tuesday, 14 January at the Stade Omnisports Eyadema and AAT Tennis Club in Lome, Togo.
