Round-robin play at the Chevron Junior Tennis Championship served off on Wednesday at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, and players have been knee-deep in action.

The tournament, which is played in two age categories -12 & Under and 16 & Under- with four groups in each category, will have the top players in each group qualify for the semifinals.

In the boys 12s, Seun Ogunsakin, who won the category in the previous edition, made a perfect start in Group A on Wednesday as he whitewashed Gbadebo Samad 10-0 10-0 and then an easy 9-1 win over Malcom Osaji on Thursday. Also in Group A, Praise Ikeuba defeated Malcolm Osaji 10-5 10-2 before earning a walkover against Gbadebo Samad.

In Group B of the boys 12s, Isaac Silas edged Precious Ikeuba 10-6, 10-6 on Wednesday and then went on to beat Kosoko Farouk 9-0 the following day. Ikeuba however bounced back from his earlier defeat to trounce Arwal Jaji 9-2 on Thursday.

In the girls 12s, Favour Amaechi best Vanessa Inyang 10-4, 10-5 in Group A on Wednesday, while Nene Yakubu edged Peace Agbeje 10-5, 10-7 in Group B. In Group C, Mary Azi proved too much for Lorelax Holzendorf, winning 10-4, 10-6. Holzendorf would brush off the disappointment of a first day loss to sweep aside Fego Ayetuoma 9-1 on Thursday.

In the boys 16s, Mohammed Idris, who finished as runner-up in the boys 12s in the previous edition, started on the wrong foot in this, as he was beaten by David Ekpeyong 10-4, 10-5 in Group A. Idris however secured a tight 9-8 victory over John Peter on Thursday, while Ekpeyong maintained his intensity to thrash Arwal Garba 9-1.

In Group B, Daniel Adeleye defeated Sunday Ameh 10-7, 10-6 on Wednesday before going on to register a 9-0 victory over Adisa Imole on Thursday.

In the girls 16s, Rebecca Ekpeyong, winner in the previous edition, began her quest for another title, with a 10-3, 10-5 victory over Idowu Lagundoye on Wednesday and kept up the form on Thursday to secure a 9-4 victory over Faith Adeusi, who had earlier been beaten by Esther Azi, 10-7, 5-10, 16-14.

Salamatu Haruna, who competed and won the girls 12 category in the previous edition and has now moved up to the 16 & under category, was beaten in both her matches in Group B. The youngster fell 10-8, 10-7 to Serena Teluwo on Wednesday before going down to Jesutoyosi Adeusi 9-4.

The final round-robin matches will be played on Friday from 10:00am, with semifinals set to hold on Saturday and the grand finale on Sunday.
