The Nigerian players produced brilliant performances to beat their respective opponents and make progress at the African Games in Rabat, Morocco on Saturday.
Joseph Imeh cruised into the second round of the men’s singles event by thrashing Mali’s Abdoulaye Bagayoko in just 48 minutes.
The 21-year-old surrendered only two games, registering a 6-1, 6-1 victory and will next take on Ivory Coast’s Eliakim Coulibaly.
Emmanuel Sunday, also, advanced to the second round with straight sets win over Fenosoa Rasendra of Madagascar. Sunday sped past the Malagasy 6-1, 6-1 in just over an hour to set up a second round meeting with top seed Mohamed Safwat of Egypt.
In the women’s event, No.11 seed, Oyinlomo Quadre proved too good for Fudia Kargbo of Sierra Leone, as she eased through with a 6-0, 6-1 victory in just 40 minutes to reach the third round.
Adesuwa Osabuohein also produced another impressive display to book her place in the third round, with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 victory over 9th seed, Faith Omurunga of Kenya. Osabuohein will next take on Avomo Celestine of Gabon for a place in the quarter-finals.
Elsewhere, Blessing Samuel and Aanu Aiyegbusi fell short in their contests. Samuel was beaten 6-1, 7-5 by Feryel Ben Hassen, who’s seeded 13th, while Aiyegbusi fell to home favourite, Sara Akid, with the Moroccan claiming a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
